Flight1 Open Day 2011 – now our 3rd annual event! We're pleased to officially announce Flight1's 3rd Open Day, again which will be based at our local European 'base' at Shoreham Airport on the beautiful UK south coast. We hope to be reverting to the popular format of our first year, with some interesting aircraft on stand to view inside and out - representing the range of our virtual hangar- with even more pilots to talk to. This is what we have planned on the day: PLEASE SEE THE UPDATES SECTION BELOW FOR THE LATEST DETAILS ON WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE DAY... • Free Landings – Fly in and if you let us know beforehand, Flight1 will cover your landing fee. We’ll even arrange a friendly parking spot next to the main event for you • Two terminals filled with friendly staff and pilots who will show you the latest products - whether you are new to flight sim or an old hand, there’ll be lots to see and plenty of people on hand to help and to chat to. Come and meet the developers who make the magic. • Flight Sim and Real World Training – Flight1’s product range spans everything from recreations of historic WWII aircraft through to top-line real world training packages for glass cockpit systems such as Avidyne and Garmin. Come and find out how to make the most of your PC to aid your aviation interests, be it flying a P-51D or keeping your IR current or transitioning to glass cockpit systems. • Hardware and more – we’ll have hardware companies like Alpine, RC Simulations, RAFSIM and Transair on hand to show you the best hardware, PC systems and controls and answer any questions you might have on getting the best from your PC simulation. • Local pilot supplies store Transair will be there with their staff of real pilots offering hardware and discounts on all the Flight1 catalogue. • Aircraft Static Display – we're hoping to have an interesting line up of aircraft, from GA to twin commuters and perhaps the odd executive transport. Whatever we can get in on Shoreham's runway and ATC have room for us to park up. So sorry there won't be a 737NG! • Real Flying - We’ll be negotiating discounts on flying lessons or trial flights on the day and you may even see aircraft like the Decathlon and Extra 300 doing some practice displays towards the end of the day! • VATSIM – the last two years, this has always proved a popular part of the event... find out more about joining one of the world's biggest virtual ATC groups and experience real ATC from real controllers when flying online. If you can't make the event in person then come and join us in the virtual fly-in (the landings are still free!). • PC Pilot Magazine – come and say hello to the world's favourite flight simulation magazine and grab your free back issue. • Talks and demonstrations – This year we'll be adding to the pilot training theme with a few more talks aimed at hardware issues and getting the most from Flight Simulator. The whole day is a totally FREE event. However, past events have proved very popular and we do ask that you register in advance to guarantee your admission and a free goody bag on the day. Open Day News & Planned Activity Updates • Goody Bag - these have been ordered and we think you'll like what you find inside! We've got free, award winning FS2004/FSX aircraft add-on worth £30 and some other rather lovely and useful presents from us, as a thank you for your support and attending. • Talks and Lectures - we have Flying Time, the on-airfield commercial pilot training centre providing experts on hand and we will be adding a couple of extra talks that are focussed around hardware questions and more general simulation interest. The current schedule of talks is: 11.00 - Instrument Flying: Topics such as departure, en-route, airways, holds and arrival procedures will be covered. This briefing is aimed at the higher level IR-type pilot (both airliner and GA). 12.00 - VFR Flights: This briefing will primarily cover map reading, headings (true/magnetic), VRPs, common mistakes (how many pilots make the map fit what you see, rather than what you see fitting the map!) and general visual navigation. 13.00 - Radio Nav & GPS: The basic operation and use of VOR/DME/NDBs and if there is time, then some tips on the use of GPS. 14.00 - EXCLUSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT: The President of Flight1 Software, Inc. - Steve Halpern - will be visiting from the USA and on hand throughout the show to talk and answer any questions you have. At this time, though, with other team members will present something totally new and exciting in the world of flight simulation and bringing our customers and community members together! 15.00 - Hardware - Getting the Right Kit: Our good friend, Paul Fryer from Alpine Systems will be giving a presentation on the latest hardware technology and how to get the best from what you have and what are the current essential hardware upgrades you need to consider. This is the time to ask those questions you have on graphics cards and processors! 16.00 - TBC. • Flying, Trial Lessons and Training Simulators - we have teamed up with two on-airfield training organisations, so if you fancy a trial lesson or booking in for some professional training in a simulator then please contact these companies: Phoenix - www.phoenixflyingsussex.co.uk - This very friendly flying school specialises in aerobatic and tail wheel flight training and conversions. They operate G-IZZ, the Decathlon immortalised in the Flight1/RealAir American Champion Aircraft add-on. They also operate a Bulldog and Pitts S2A. Stuart, the CFO, is a BA Captain and will guarantee you learn and have fun with every lesson. Contact him via the website to find out about booking in a flight in G-IZZ or any other aircraft and he will ensure you get a great value deal if you mention Flight1. Flying Time - www.flyingtime.co.uk - DA40, DA42, 172 training flights. DA42 IR and PA-28 simulator training. Quote Flight1 Open Day and book and pay in advance and you will receive a 20% discount on their regular lesson prices. • Parking - we're sorry to say that Shoreham Airport has changed their parking contractors and they cannot now offer our guests free parking, as in past years. Please make sure that you park in visitor parking bays and have a valid Pay and Display ticket - the maximum cost is £2 for the day. However, to keep within the spirit of the day Flight1 will happily reimburse your cost of parking (up to the maximum £2 cost) - just bring us your parking ticket just before leaving and we will exchange it for its face value! If you have any concerns or issues about accessibility with regards to parking or access to the event please contact us directly via the Registration Page. We will do everything we can to make it easy for you to be there and ensure a great day for everyone. • Free Landing - this offer still stands. We will need your aircraft type and registration ahead of the day, so please let us know via the Registration Page if you intend to come by aircraft and we will let you know we will let you know the best way of doing this and have a resident pilot on hand to help with any concerns with flying into this beautiful airport. • Flt. Lt. Jon Egging “Red 4” Jon Egging was on the Red Arrows team to do a sponsored bike ride in support of their chosen charity. It involves riding 400 miles West to East from coast to coast across the widest part of England. Following last month’s tragic accident, his wife Emma has pledged to do the ride in his place and the hope is that people will continue to sponsor Emma in Jon's name. We will be asking for donations to add to her sponsorship in Jon's memory on behalf of all aviators, and we thank you in advance for your support for this cause. More details can be found here.
